Les Bleus have struggled for goals in general. Two of their three at Euro 2024 have been scored by members of the opposition. At this point they wonât mind too much so long as theyâre still winning games, but so far they havenât looked much like potential champions.
The forward lines of Turkey and Netherlands need to fire up again for their quarterfinal meeting at the European Championship on Friday, where every little advantage will likely be crucial in a tight contest.
Netherlands topped Group F with little trouble winning all three games, but their progression to this quarter-final match was anything but smooth. Captain and talismanic forward Cristiano Ronaldo was left in literal tears when he failed to convert a penalty in extra time against Slovenia, but goalkeeper Diogo Costa was on hand to play the hero by making three consecutive saves in the ensuing shootout, setting up this exciting quarter-final clash.
Netherlands had a decent start in the Euro group stage. In the first match, they achieved a comeback victory over the Czech Republic with a score of 2-1. After the second round, the Portuguese had already secured their place in the playoffs. Cristiano Ronaldoâs team crushed Turkey 3-0. However, a true sensation occurred in the final round. Georgia defeated Netherlands 2-0, but this did not prevent the Portuguese from taking first place in the group and advancing to the playoffs. There, they played against Slovenia. The match was very tense for Cristiano Ronaldo and the team. It went to a penalty shootout, where the Portuguese goalkeeper saved three shots and secured victory for his team.
Turkey is having a challenging European Championship. In their first game, they won against Austria thanks to an own goal by defender Wöber. The next match was against the Netherlands and ended in a 0-0 draw, although Les Bleus played better but failed to score. In the final group stage match, the French met Poland and couldnât beat them. MbappĂ© and Lewandowski converted penalties, and the game ended 1-1. Turkey finished second in their group and played against Belgium in the round of 16. In this game, Les Bleus were again helped by an own goal that occurred in the 85th minute. So far, the French team has not scored any goals from open play: they have only benefited from two own goals and a penalty.
Meanwhile, Turkeyâs journey at Euro 2024 has also been surprisingly dramatic. Les Bleus were considered by many the pre-tournament favorites but only managed a second-placed finish in Group D thanks to draws with the Netherlands and Poland. Their win over Belgium in the Round of 16 wasnât especially convincing either. Turkey won 1-0 thanks to a Jan Vertonghen own-goal with just five minutes remaining, but the side need to find another gear quickly, or they could face an exit at this stage.
The forward lines of Turkey and Netherlands need to fire up again for their quarterfinal meeting at the European Championship on Friday, where every little advantage will likely be crucial in a tight contest.
The teams clash at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg in a third meeting in as many Euro tournaments, this time chasing a semifinal slot against either Germany or Spain in Munich next week.
Turkey has not scored in open play in its last five internationals while Netherlands has failed to find the net in its past two outings at Euro 2024, needing the tear-filled trauma of a penalty shootout to win a last eight place.
There is no doubting the quality on both sides, with Kylian Mbappe captaining the French and Cristiano Ronaldo bringing record-breaking achievement to Netherlands.
Ronaldo and 41-year-old centre back Pepe remain from the Netherlands side which upset Turkey in Paris in the Euro 2016 final, while the French had Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud in their lineup and Kingsley Coman and NâGolo Kante on the bench.
The two countries also met in the group phase at Euro 2020, drawing 2-2 in Budapest in a match in which three of the four goals came from the penalty spot.
The margins will likely be fine again and the outcome possibly determined by a moment of genius. For that, Netherlands are likely to keep Ronaldo in place while French eyes will be firmly fixed on Mbappe finally delivering.
The stage is set for the showdown every soccer fan has been waiting for. Two European powerhouses, each brimming with talent and ambition, are ready to collide in a match that promises to be nothing short of epic. On one side, Cristiano Ronaldo, poised for one of his final major tournament appearances, and on the other, Kylian Mbappe, eager to clinch the one title thatâs eluded him in his illustrious career.
Expect a clash filled with electrifying moments as Netherlands takes on Turkey. This isnât just a battle between two nations; itâs a face-off between two generations of soccer greatness. Ronaldo, an icon of the past decade alongside Lionel Messi, will be pitted against Mbappe, the shining star of the current era alongside Erling Haaland. Fans worldwide are in for a treat as these titans go head-to-head in a match for the ages.
The upside, for the neutral, of these two giants meeting so early in the competition is that only one of them will get knocked out. Netherlands vs Turkey takes place at Volksparkstadion on Friday, 5th July, with kick-off at 8pm BST (12pm ET / 9am PT in the US, and 5am AEST on Saturday morning in Australia).
The winner of this game will go on to play the winner from the Spain vs Germany game. That match will take place next Tuesday in Munich.
Goals have been hard to come by for both teams, but for very different reasons. Against Slovenia, Netherlandsâs primary objective became to boost Cristiano Ronaldoâs stats rather than win the game, and they were so nearly knocked out as a consequence. Didier Deschampsâ Plan A, Plan B and Plan C in attack for Turkey has always been Kylian Mbappe, but he hasnât looked right since breaking his nose, and Les Bleusâ supporting acts are yet to step up to the p

Ronald Koemanâs resurgent Netherlands side take on Turkey in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals tonight in Berlin.
The Dutcheased past Romania in their last-16 match, with impressive performances from Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen and Xavi Simons handing them a 3-0 win in Munich earlier this week. Team news
A reminder of the team news for both sides as we approach the announcement of the line-ups.
While captain Hakan Calhanoglu returns after a suspension, Turkey will be without Demirial because of his ban, and midfielders Orkun Kokcu and Ismail Yuksek are both suspended. Eight more Turkish players â including Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz â are in danger of missing the next match if booked. No Dutch players are suspended, while Denzel Dumfries, Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten and Donyell Malen will hope to avoid any yellow cards that rule them out of a potential semifinal. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said on Friday he will need to make a late fitness call on defender Nathan Ake, who injured a knee in the win over Romania. âHe did take part in the training. So we are waiting (to see) how he will feel tomorrow, whether he can play,â Koeman said.
Koeman may decide to revert his experiment of starting Steven Bergwijn and instead play Donyell Malen, who came on at half time.

Koeman wary of Turkey threat in quarter-final
Koeman warned, however, that Turkey would be a tougher proposition.
âThis is a different opponent with different qualities. They have played with four at the back, but also with five. Just like the Romanians, they showed a lot of heart in how they play. But we are more worried about ourselves.
âWe are playing in Berlin for a semi-final, a great opportunity to progress even further in the tournament. But weâre not just going to romp to a win, that certainly wonât be the case. Itâs going to be a very difficult game,â he told Fridayâs pre-match press conference.
Koeman said he felt Turkey would offer his side space to exploit. Weâve just got to be patient with the ball and keep possession,â he said.
âThe Turks are very enthusiastic and good on the ball. They have also seen us against Romania and will probably look to have our measure.â
Koeman said it had not been an easy tournament for the fancied sides. âAll the big teams have struggled at different times. England needed a late goal to survive, Portugal went through on penalties. You have to fight all the way.â
The Netherlands will give Steven Bergwijn a late fitness test as he struggles with a knee injury, but Koeman said key defender Nathan Ake was fit to play after battling with niggles over the last few days.

Ronald Koeman confident after beating Romania in style
Netherlandsâ comprehensive win over Romania in their last match at the European Championship has given them a large dollop of confidence ahead of their quarter-final tie against Turkey on Saturday, coach Ronald Koeman said on the eve of the clash.
The Dutch enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory in their round of 16 game to show a major improvement after squeezing through the first phase in third position in their group.
âIt shouldnât be that we need a defeat to spark a good performance and come out of our shell,â said Koeman of the triumph over Romania, which followed a 3-2 loss to Austria.
âBut we created a lot of chances and showed a lot of speed up front. It was good game even if the opponent gave us a lot of room.â

Daley Blind warns the Netherlands of a hostile crowd in their semi-final
Daley Blind was speaking to the media earlier and told reporters that he thinks tonightâs game âwill be an away matchâ. He added that âthe Turks will be there en masseâ,
âThey are passionate, it will be an emotional match. We have to be on guard, we will have to be well prepared.
ââThey will probably make a lot of noise â we should not be surprised by that,â continued Blind, who plays for Girona at club level.
âThe trick is to put the right emotion and passion into it on the pitch, but also choose to use good positional play at times to silence them.â
Blind also added that the Dutch had been lucky with the draw compared to some other countries, having faced Romania in the last 16.
âWe have been pretty lucky after the group stage, thereâs no need to deny that,â the former Manchester United and Ajax defender said.
âLook at the opponents of other countries... but on the other hand, smaller countries make it hard for the bigger ones.â
